The Lemonade Stand is a thriller that follows the character of
Ronald Nhlakanipho Makhathini, a court scribe by profession.
He finds himself in the Patriotic Republic of South Africa, a
fascist state which demands total obedience from its citizens. As
such, it doles out cruel punishments for the pettiest of crimes.
In the Patriotic Republic of South Africa, the death penalty has
been reinstated. His duties as a court scribe prompts Ronald to
question the motives of the state and the efficacy of its judiciary
system. Ronald’s doubts are brought into sharp focus when he
transcribes the events that unfold during a high-profile execution
case. The condemned prisoner, Obadiah, has a devious plan to
derail the day’s proceedings and to show everyone present what
he is capable of. As Ronald and Amanda face an uncertain and
terrifying situation, they rediscover their friendship. Ronald
begins a journey of self-discovery; he must come to terms with
the idea of capital punishment, his questions about the true
nature of the state, and death itself while fighting for survival.
The Lemonade Stand explores the themes of death, punishment,
and questioning the status quo, by examining the dangers of
giving the state too much control over its citizens’ lives.
